Maison Castel Merlot Rosé is a 12% ABV dry rosé wine made entirely from Merlot grapes by the French wine house Maison Castel, from the IGP Pays d'Oc region in southern France. Although Merlot is better known for red wines, here the grape's fresh, fruity side is brought to the fore.
How is it made?
Pays d'Oc, with its hot, dry summers and mild winters, is a region well suited to lively wines with pronounced fruit aroma. The Maison Castel team selects grapes from its partner growers, extracts colour through direct pressing and carries out fermentation at a low temperature. The wine is then left on its own lees for a time to preserve its freshness and liveliness. According to the producer, the wine can be kept for up to two years, and it is at its best when drunk young and fresh.
What does Maison Castel Merlot Rosé taste like?
It has a pale pink colour with coral reflections. Floral notes and small red fruits are felt on the nose. The palate is fresh, full and fruity, leaving a finish of reasonable length after each sip.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
It is recommended to serve it well chilled, at 10–14°C. It can be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif, but it also goes well with salads, grilled dishes and spiced cuisines; it is a balanced companion to grilled chicken or lightly spiced Asian food.
