Spiced rum is a drink made by adding spice flavours such as vanilla, or fruit and coffee flavours, to a rum base. You can order from our spiced rum range, from classic spiced bottles to banana, cherry, passion fruit and coffee versions, with delivery across North Cyprus.
Spiced rum is usually made by flavouring a light-bodied rum with spices and flavourings; it's often darker than plain rum. Although it's an established trade name on the shelves, there's a legal point to note: the European Union's regulation 2019/787 doesn't allow rum to be flavoured. So bottles with added spice or fruit flavour are legally labelled in the EU not as "rum" but as a rum-based spirit drink, and their strength may be below plain rum's 37.5% minimum. Captain Morgan Original Spiced Gold, for example, is sold in the UK and EU as a rum-based spirit drink at 35% ABV.
The style went mainstream in the 1980s; Captain Morgan's spiced rum was launched in the USA in 1984. More recently, Dead Man's Fingers, born in 2015 as a restaurant's own rum in St Ives, Cornwall, breathed new life into the category with fruit and coffee versions.
Spiced rum is most loved in long drinks. The simplest recipe is to fill a tall glass with ice and top up with cola, ginger beer or ginger ale; add a slice of lime or orange if you like. Apple juice goes well with the spice notes too. Banana and passion fruit versions shine in tropical cocktails, the coffee version in espresso or creamy cocktails. Thanks to their sweetish style, some can also be sipped neat over a single ice cube. For plain and aged bottles, see our rum shelf, or the rum and tequila category for the whole range.
It's made with a rum base, but as the EU definition doesn't allow rum to be flavoured, bottles with added spice or fruit are legally a rum-based spirit drink. "Spiced rum" is a widely used trade name. That's why some spiced rums are below plain rum's 37.5% minimum strength; check the label for the exact figure.
The most common mixers are cola, ginger beer and ginger ale, with plenty of ice and a slice of lime. Apple and orange juice also go well with the spices. Fruit versions work better with pineapple or tropical juices, and coffee versions with cold brew or creamy cocktails.
Yes. Thanks to their sweetish, spicy style, some spiced rums are enjoyable neat over a single large ice cube. Still, most of these bottles are made with long drinks and cocktails in mind; if you're after complex cask character when sipping neat, aged plain rums may suit you better.
