Mehmetçik-Büyükkonuk municipality covers a group of villages at the start of the Karpaz road, in the north-east of the İskele district: Mehmetçik, Büyükkonuk, Bafra, Kumyalı, Sazlıköy, Yedikonuk, Zeybekköy, Pamuklu, Balalan and Çayırova. In other words, the Bafra Tourism Zone hotel strip also lies within this municipality. Jastin Off Licence's Bafra branch is close to most of these villages: Mehmetçik is a few kilometres away, Büyükkonuk and Kumyalı around 10–15 km.

The character of the villages

Mehmetçik is known for its vineyards; its grape festival has been a local gathering point for years. Büyükkonuk, with its stone houses, traditional craft workshops and eco-tourism guesthouses, draws people looking for a quiet village holiday. Kumyalı is a seaside village with a small fishing harbour. Sazlıköy and Yedikonuk are peaceful settlements among farmland.

Who orders here?

  • Expats who've bought village homes: British and German retirees in particular do their weekly wine, beer and gin shop in one go.
  • Eco-guesthouse guests: travellers staying in Büyükkonuk want a bottle of wine with dinner or a local liqueur.
  • Village weddings and garden parties: bulk orders of raki, beer and soft drinks. Talking these through a few days ahead makes it easier to set stock aside.
  • Hotel staff: people heading home to the village after a shift look for a shop open late. Our Bafra branch is open until 2am Tuesday to Sunday and until midnight on Mondays.

Address and delivery

House numbers are rarely used in the villages. Send a location pin on WhatsApp or directions from a landmark such as the mosque, café or mukhtar's office. Before setting off for the village, we confirm your order by WhatsApp or phone (+90 539 138 15 62); the time and any charge are agreed in that call, depending on how busy the day is. We check age (18+) on delivery. We have German- and English-speaking staff, so expat residents can write their notes in their own language.

Getting ready for a garden party

In the villages, guests are usually entertained outdoors, under a vine or in the garden. Working out how much to buy per person for a big gathering can feel tricky. Tell us the number of guests and how long it will last, and we'll plan the balance of raki, beer and soft drinks with you. Don't forget plenty of soda, water and juice for hot summer evenings.

If you're going to Büyükkonuk's eco-tourism events or the grape festival in Mehmetçik, check the rules on drinking on site with the organisers.

Suggestions

Wine for visitors to wine country, raki for a wedding table, beer and cider for summer evenings. You can pay cash in Turkish lira, pounds sterling, euros or US dollars, or by credit card. For the rest of the peninsula see Karpaz; for the coast see Bafra Tourism Zone.
