What is cider?
Cider is made by fermenting apple juice. Almost any apple variety can be used, but producers prefer cider apples with a better balance of tannin and acidity. The drink made the same way from pear juice is called perry. As it's made from fruit rather than grain, cider technically isn't beer; but thanks to its refreshing, fizzy character and similar strength, it usually sits on the beer shelves.
Strength varies widely: traditional English ciders are roughly 1.2% to 8.5% ABV, continental European examples 3.5% to 12%.
Cider traditions and fruit cider
The West Country of England is known for tannic, full-bodied ciders; Normandy and Brittany in France for sparkling cidres ranging from dry (brut) to sweet (doux); and Spain's Asturias region for its sidra tradition. In Sweden, a modern, fruit-flavoured, sweeter and refreshing style of cider has come to the fore.
Fruit ciders add other fruits such as cherry, blueberry or strawberry to the apple, either before or after fermentation. So the same base drink takes on a tart, sweet or tropical character depending on the fruit added. Fruit ciders are usually sweeter; if you prefer a drier taste, go for traditional French or English-style examples.
Rekorderlig
Rekorderlig is a cider brand made by Åbro Bryggeri in Vimmerby, Sweden, and is now sold in many countries. The flavours in our range:
