What does the Turkish beer category cover?
This category covers beers brewed in Turkey. The range comes from the portfolios of two major brewers. Anadolu Efes has been brewing in Turkey since 1969; Efes Pilsen, Efes Malt, Efes Xtra and Bomonti are its brands. The company has also brewed Miller Genuine Draft under licence in Turkey since 2000. The Türk Tuborg brewery in İzmir produces Tuborg Gold, Tuborg Special and Tuborg Ice, as well as Carlsberg. That's why Carlsberg and Miller Genuine Draft are listed in this category even though they're international brands.

Main styles
Pale lager and pilsner
Most of the range is pale lager. These beers are fermented with a bottom-fermenting yeast at cool temperatures and conditioned in the cold; the result is clear, refreshing, with a lively head and moderate bitterness. Pilsner takes its name from the city of Plzeň in Bohemia and became the model for pale lagers. Tuborg Gold and Carlsberg are examples of this refreshing style on our shelves.
All-malt and unfiltered beers
In unfiltered beers, the yeast and some sediment are left unfiltered, so they look slightly hazy and feel a little fuller. Bomonti Filtresiz (Unfiltered) is Anadolu Efes's unfiltered beer made with 100% malt. Efes Malt is another of the Efes varieties in the range.
Other options
The shelf also has varieties such as Efes Xtra, Tuborg Special and Tuborg Ice. Strength and character can vary between them, so we suggest checking the label when choosing.
Serving suggestions
- Temperature: pale lagers are at their most refreshing well chilled, at around 7 °C. Unfiltered and all-malt beers show their aromas better served a degree or two less cold.
- Pouring: yeast can settle at the bottom of unfiltered beer; gently swirling the last bit before pouring balances the haze and texture.
- Food: refreshing lagers go well with grills, kebabs, pizza and fried food; unfiltered beers with a cheese board and lightly spiced meze.

What is pilsner?
Pilsner is a pale lager style named after the city of Plzeň in Bohemia (today's Czech Republic). The first pilsner, made in Plzeň, became the template for pale lagers around the world. It's usually clear, golden, refreshing and with noticeable hop bitterness; Efes Pilsen takes its name from this style.
What is unfiltered beer?
Unfiltered beer isn't filtered, or is only lightly filtered, after fermentation. As yeast and some sediment remain, it looks slightly hazy and can have a fuller texture and more pronounced aroma. Sediment at the bottom of the bottle is normal; the last bit can be gently swirled before pouring.
Why are Carlsberg and Miller in the Turkish beer category?
Because these brands are brewed in Turkey. Carlsberg is brewed at the Türk Tuborg brewery in İzmir, and Miller Genuine Draft has been brewed under licence by Anadolu Efes since 2000.
