Tatlısu (Tatlisu, Akanthou) is a village on the northern slopes of the Five Finger (Beşparmak) Mountains, running down to the sea through olive and carob groves. In recent years, sea-view villa developments and small beach venues along the coast have made it a weekend getaway. To the east is Kaplıca bay and, on the mountaintop at around 700 metres, Kantara Castle, looking out over the Mesarya plain and Karpaz.
How do you get from Bafra to Tatlısu?
Jastin Off Licence's Bafra branch is on the southern side of the mountains and Tatlısu on the northern side. The road between them runs either over the winding mountain pass towards Kantara or via the main links further west: roughly 40–50 km depending on the route. Because of the mountain road it takes longer than a flat coast road would, so we recommend ordering early for Tatlısu and Mersinlik.
The villa-week order
Villas in Tatlısu are usually rented for a week by families or groups of friends. With little choice in the village, it's common to place one order on day one that will "last all week". A sample basket:
- Two cases of beer and a few bottles of rosé for the pool
- Red and white wine for dinners
- Gin or rum for cocktails, with plenty of tonic, soda and juice
- Soft drinks and snacks for the children
Ordering on the day you check in, or the day before, is fine. Forward the location your villa owner gave you on WhatsApp.
Mersinlik and the Kantara road
Mersinlik is a small village east of Tatlısu, on the narrow strip of coast between the mountains and the sea. Houses along the Kantara road are high up and spread out. At these addresses the driver may need to call you from the village entrance or a junction on the main road. It's safer to plan handovers in daylight than to meet on a mountain road after dark.
If you'd rather come to Bafra yourself, our Bafra branch is open Tuesday to Sunday 09:00–02:00 and Monday 09:00–00:00. You could combine a trip to Kantara Castle with the Bafra coast and shop on the way back.
Kaplıca bay and beach days
Kaplıca bay, east of Tatlısu, with its long sandy beach and small beach venue, is a local favourite. If you're spending the day there, it's easiest to fill your cool bag at the villa before you go. Choose cans over glass on the beach and take your rubbish home.
