The imported beer shelf is a chance to taste the signature styles of the world's great beer nations in one place. Most are pale lagers, but the range also includes ale-family styles such as German wheat beer, Belgian-style white beer and Irish stout.
Budweiser Budvar, from the state brewery founded in 1895 in České Budějovice in the Czech Republic, is a Czech lager known for its Saaz hops and long conditioning. Stella Artois, from Leuven in Belgium, is a pilsner. Heineken from the Netherlands and Beck's from Germany are in this group too.
Corona Extra, brewed since 1925, is a pale, light lager famous for being served with a wedge of lime or lemon in the neck of the bottle. America's Budweiser belongs to the same light lager family.
Weissbier is a pale, refreshing German beer with a generous head, in which at least half the grain is wheat malt. Its distinctive banana and clove aroma comes from the yeast. Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier, one of the beers the BJCP style guidelines cite as an example of the style, is brewed at the state brewery in Freising, Bavaria.
Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, brewed in Obernai in Alsace, is a fruity wheat beer with citrus notes, close to the Belgian witbier tradition.
Guinness Draught, brewed in Dublin since 1759, is an Irish stout with a dark colour from roasted barley and a coffee-like aroma. The nitrogen widget in its cans and bottles creates a dense, creamy head when poured.
The shelf also has beers such as Carlsberg Elephant, Van Pur Extra Strong and Amsterdam Navigator; as strengths vary, we suggest checking the label when choosing.

No. Budweiser Budvar is the Czech lager from the state-owned brewery founded in 1895 in České Budějovice (Budweis in German), in the Czech Republic. Budweiser is a brand of the American brewer Anheuser-Busch. The two companies have been in a legal dispute over the name since the early 1900s, which is why they're sold under different names in some countries.
Guinness Draught cans and bottles contain a small plastic widget with nitrogen. When the can is opened, the widget releases nitrogen into the beer, creating a dense, creamy, long-lasting head when poured. Guinness on draught gets the same effect from a nitrogen gas mix.
Both are refreshing beers made with wheat, but their traditions differ. In German Weissbier, at least half the grain is wheat malt, and the banana and clove aroma comes from the yeast. Belgian-origin witbier uses unmalted wheat and is spiced with coriander and dried orange peel, giving a more lemony, spicy drink.
Serving Corona Extra with a wedge of lime or lemon in the neck of the bottle is a popular tradition; the citrus adds a refreshing sourness and aroma to the beer. It's a serving habit, not a requirement; Corona can be drunk without it.
