Cricova National Merlot is a dry red wine from the National series of Cricova, Moldova's renowned wine house, made from Merlot grapes. Cricova is one of Moldova's best-known producers, known for its underground cellars in the town of the same name. Converted from limestone quarries, these cellars descend to a depth of around 100 metres; the galleries where the wines are stored, with streets named after the wines they hold, resemble an underground city.
What does Cricova National Merlot taste like?
It is distinguished on the nose by notes of violet and leather. The palate is full and soft, with light oak touches in the flavour. It is prepared for fresh drinking rather than ageing, suited to everyday consumption. Merlot is one of the world's most popular red grapes, prized for its soft tannins and fruity character.
What is the National series?
The National series comprises everyday table wines made by Cricova from varieties such as Merlot, Chardonnay and Muscat, without a stated vintage. These wines are offered for fresh drinking rather than ageing.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It is recommended to serve at around 16°C. It pairs especially well with spiced meat dishes; grilled red meat, lamb tandoor and spiced meatballs are suitable accompaniments for this wine.
