Andes Merlot is a 13% ABV dry red wine offered by the German wine company Peter Mertes from Chile's Valle Central (Central Valley) region. It is made from single-varietal Merlot grapes, presented without a stated vintage, and sold in a screw-capped Bordeaux-style bottle. Merlot is one of the world's most popular red grapes, prized for its soft tannins and fruity character.
Why does the Valle Central matter?
The Valle Central is a broad valley stretching between the Andes and the coastal mountain range, accounting for much of Chile's wine production. Sunny days and cool nights create favourable conditions for red varieties such as Merlot to retain a ripe fruit character.
What does Andes Merlot taste like?
Dark fruit aromas such as blackberry, blueberry and plum stand out on the nose. The palate offers a velvety texture and soft tannins; it is a fruit-driven, easy-drinking red in the New World style.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It is suitable to serve at around 16–18°C. It pairs well with hearty dishes such as grilled red meat, roast lamb, pasta with bolognese sauce and mature cheeses. It is also a comfortable choice for barbecue tables.
