Bombay Sapphire

Bombay Sapphire is a 40% ABV London Dry gin made by the Bombay Spirits Company, part of Bacardi, at the Laverstoke Mill distillery in Hampshire, England. Launched in 1986, the gin takes its name from the gin and tonic tradition that spread in India during the British Raj, and from the Star of Bombay, a blue-purple sapphire.

The gin is prepared with ten botanical aromatics: juniper, almond, lemon peel, liquorice root, orris root, angelica, coriander, Chinese cinnamon (cassia), cubeb pepper and grains of paradise. The aromatics are not mixed into the alcohol; the alcohol vapour is passed through baskets containing the aromatics, flavouring it by vapour infusion. This method gives the gin a lighter, more floral character.

What does Bombay Sapphire taste like?

On the nose, juniper, lemon peel and notes reminiscent of lemon tart filling are felt, along with black and white pepper, spice and light herbal tones. On the palate, the opening is delicate, light and sweetish; juniper, lemon peel and coriander are followed by a pronounced peppery warmth. On the finish, resinous juniper, light lavender and mixed pepper remain.

How should it be served?

A gin and tonic made with plenty of ice, tonic and a slice of lemon or lime is the best-known serve. Thanks to its balanced aromatic structure, it is also frequently chosen for classic cocktails such as Martini, Collins and Gimlet.

What does Bombay Sapphire pair well with?

Citrus and spice notes form a good match with light seafood dishes. Grilled fish, prawns, sushi and lemon-dressed green salads pair well alongside it as a balanced long drink with tonic.
