Plymouth Gin

Plymouth Gin is a 41.2% ABV gin made at the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, on England's south-west coast, which has operated from the same building since 1793. The brand now belongs to Pernod Ricard; Plymouth gin is recognised as a distinct style, known for a more earthy profile than London Dry.

What is the history of Plymouth Gin?

Parts of the distillery building date back to 1431 and are said to have once been a monastery of the Dominican order, the Black Friars, which is why a monk figure appears on the base of every bottle. Thanks to its harbourside location, Plymouth has historically sold large quantities of gin to the Royal Navy. The gin is distilled in a Victorian-era copper still.

Which botanicals are used, and what does it taste like?

The recipe has relied on the same seven botanicals since 1793: juniper, coriander seed, cardamom, orris root, angelica root, and orange and lemon peel; the water comes from Dartmoor. The nose is earthy and rich, with juniper, angelica and coriander to the fore. On the palate it is full-bodied, rooty and lightly sweet, accompanied by citrus and coriander. The finish is soft and medium-length.

How is it served?

It is a classic choice for a gin and tonic made with lime or lemon, and for a Dry Martini.

Its earthy, citrus-led structure pairs well with seafood, grilled fish and fresh salads.
