Old Virginia Original is a 40% ABV Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey, distilled in Kentucky and matured for more than two years in charred white oak casks. The brand belongs to the French drinks company La Martiniquaise.
How is Old Virginia made?
According to the producer, Old Virginia bourbons are made from a grain mix containing at least 51% corn: the grains are milled, fermented with yeast, distilled, and then rested in new, charred oak casks. Original is the range's entry-level expression; the brand's 6- and 12-year-old bourbons, along with the honey-flavoured Smooth Honey, belong to the same family. The "straight bourbon" designation shows that the whiskey has been matured for at least two years in line with these rules.
What does Old Virginia Original taste like?
The producer highlights pronounced oak notes with a light touch of vanilla. Retailer descriptions mention caramel, oak and vanilla on the palate, accompanied by light spice, with a soft, long finish.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
The producer recommends drinking it neat or over ice; it also serves as a suitable base for cola, ginger ale or classic bourbon cocktails. It pairs well with grilled red meat, barbecue and smoked dishes, as well as dark chocolate desserts.
