Gold Bar Black Double Cask Straight Bourbon

Gold Bar Black Double Cask is a 46% ABV straight bourbon whiskey from San Francisco's Gold Bar Whiskey, made from a mash bill of 80% corn and 20% rye, matured in new American oak and then rested a second time in Napa Valley wine casks. It is also listed as "Blend 820" by some retailers.

How is it produced?

The mash bill uses Texas corn and Oklahoma rye; the whiskey is distilled in Texas. The initial maturation in new American oak casks lasts 3 to 6 years. The whiskey is then given a final maturation in French oak wine casks from Napa Valley wineries; according to the producer, this "double cask" method adds softness and complexity. The whiskey is bottled without cold filtration and has won a Double Gold award at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

What does Gold Bar Black taste like?

The producer describes the profile as layers of smoke, spiced rye and creamy fruit. Maple syrup, caramel and toffee notes are joined by spiced rye and vanilla on the nose. On the palate, spiced rye, roasted cinnamon and tobacco stand out; a buttery-soft transition with cherry and sweet fruit tones follows. The finish is long and balanced, with smoke, spice and creamy fruit remaining together.

How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat, with a few drops of water, or over a single large ice cube; it also forms a strong base for bourbon cocktails such as the Old Fashioned. Its spicy, smoky character pairs well with barbecued food, grilled red meat and mature cheeses.
