Maker's Mark is a 45% ABV Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey produced in small batches at Maker's Mark distillery in Loretto, Kentucky. It now belongs to the Suntory Global Spirits group.
Maker's Mark is known for using red winter wheat instead of the rye common in most bourbons in its grain mix; this choice gives the whiskey a softer, rounder character. Its square-cut bottle and hand-dipped red wax seal are the brand's signature. The 70cl bottle sold in Europe, like the US version, is 90 proof, or 45% ABV.
According to Master of Malt's notes, the nose is fruity and rich; spiced honey, mixed peel confectionery, nuts and cut fruit are supported by toasted oak. The palate is rich and full-bodied; it carries spice, malted barley, buttery caramel and vanilla. The finish is quite sweet, carrying buttery caramel and dry oak spice.
It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails such as the Old Fashioned, Whisky Sour and Mint Julep. It pairs well with grilled red meat, barbecued food and caramel or chocolate desserts.
