Buffalo Trace

Buffalo Trace is a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. The distillery has belonged to Sazerac Company since 1992; the flagship bourbon of the same name was launched in 1999.

The story of Buffalo Trace

According to the producer, distilling has taken place on this site since 1775, and the facility is described as the oldest continuously operating distillery in the United States. The name comes from the old bison migration trail that crossed the Kentucky River. This bottle is the US-market 1-litre version, filled at 90 proof, or 45% ABV; bottles sold in Europe are generally 40%.

What does it taste like?

This dark amber whiskey's nose shows vanilla, mint and molasses. On the palate, it begins with a pleasant sweetness, brown sugar and spice, followed by oak, caramel, dark fruit and aniseed. The finish is long, soft and deep.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat, over a single large ice cube, or in classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned and Manhattan. It pairs well with grilled red meat, barbecued food and dark-chocolate desserts. Adding a few drops of water when drinking it neat softens the vanilla and oak notes of its 45% body, making it easier to appreciate.
