Jack Daniel's Gentleman Jack

Gentleman Jack is a 40% ABV Tennessee whiskey produced at the Jack Daniel Distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee, part of the Brown-Forman group. Its difference from classic Jack Daniel's is that it is filtered twice through sugar maple charcoal.

What does double charcoal filtering mean?

All Jack Daniel's whiskeys are filtered drop by drop through sugar maple charcoal before going into cask. Gentleman Jack is filtered through charcoal a second time after maturation; the producer states that this process gives the whiskey an exceptional smoothness. The name is a nod to the distillery's founder, Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel.

What does it taste like?

The producer's notes highlight new oak on the nose, light caramel on the palate and butter on the finish. According to Master of Malt's notes, the nose is caramel, toasted oak and lightly aniseed-spiced; the palate carries liquorice, oak, cinnamon and a touch of banana, with roasted notes, spice and citrus on the finish.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat, with a single ice cube, or extended with ginger ale. Its soft character pairs well with grilled red meat, barbecued food and dark-chocolate desserts. Thanks to its second charcoal filtering, it is also soft neat; drinking it at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass shows off its aromas better.
