Lower East Side is a 40% ABV blended malt Scotch whisky created by the blenders at The Borders Distillery in Scotland, combining single malt whiskies from different regions. It takes its name from New York's Lower East Side neighbourhood and is designed with cocktail bars in mind.
The blend contains no grain whisky; single malts from various parts of Scotland are matured in American oak casks. The brand highlights a theme of "freedom" running from the Scottish Enlightenment to the American constitution, and recommends the whisky over ice, in a Manhattan, or in new cocktails. The brand's slogan, "Made in Scotland. At home in a Manhattan", sums up this approach.
It is a soft, harmonious blend. On the nose, vanilla and almond notes come through first. On the palate, a round, supple, fruity structure combines with a touch of honey and a light but distinct smokiness. The finish is smooth.
It can be enjoyed over ice, in classic cocktails such as the Manhattan or Old Fashioned, or neat. Its honey and almond tones pair well with a nut platter, mature cheeses and chocolate desserts.
