Vat 69 is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky created in 1882 in Leith by William Sanderson & Son, now produced by Diageo. At its peak, it ranked among the world's ten best-selling whiskies.
What kind of whisky is Vat 69?
Rooted in the Sanderson family of Leith, Edinburgh's port district, Vat 69 is a no-age-statement blend designed for everyday drinking. Despite its long history, it is still known today for its clean, easy-drinking character.
What does it taste like?
On the nose, hints of spice and caramel are felt alongside malted barley and a soft wheaty character, with a light pear-juice note. On the palate, ground almond, malted barley, biscuit, pear and a pinch of pepper appear, offering a sweet, round drink. The finish is woody, spiced and caramel-toned.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
It can be enjoyed extended with ice, soda or cola. Its easy-drinking character pairs well with barbecued food, grilled meats and nuts. When preparing a highball, using plenty of ice and cold soda turns its malty, almond-like notes into a refreshing drink. A few drops of water when drinking it neat opens up its pear and spice notes.

- Palate
- Ground almonds, malt, biscuit and pear; a pinch of pepper, sweet and rounded.
- Finish
- Woody, spicy and caramelised.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
- Keep wine bottles on their side and spirits upright.
- Serve white/rosé and sparkling wine at 6–12°C, and reds at 16–18°C.
- Keep opened bottles closed; drink wine within a few days of opening.
