Scallywag Speyside Blended Malt

Scallywag Speyside Blended Malt is a blended malt Scotch whisky prepared by Glasgow-based independent family firm Douglas Laing & Co. solely from single malt whiskies of the Speyside region. According to the producer, the blend includes malts from distilleries such as Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes; Spanish sherry casks are used predominantly for maturation.

Where does the name Scallywag come from?

The brand takes its name from the Fox Terriers the Douglas Laing family has kept over the years; the character on the label also represents these dogs. The whisky is bottled in small batches, without cold filtration or added colouring. Its dark colour comes entirely from the sherry casks. The 1-litre travel bottle is filled at a higher strength than the standard 70cl bottle, at 48%.

What does Scallywag taste like?

Pronounced spices mingling with vanilla are felt on the nose. On the palate, cooked fruits and dark chocolate open up layer by layer, joined by nutmeg and cinnamon. The finish lingers with orange peel, fresh ginger, cocoa and fruitcake notes.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

Drinking it neat or with a few drops of water at room temperature helps open up the aromas. Its sherry-influenced character pairs well with dark-chocolate desserts, mature cheeses and nuts.
