Gladstone Axe American Oak

The Gladstone Axe American Oak is a blended malt Scotch whisky made by blending malt whiskies from 14 different distilleries in the Highlands and Islay regions, matured in old American oak bourbon casks. The blend contains no grain whisky; it is made entirely from malted barley. The bottle sold in Europe is 41% ABV.

Where does the name come from?

The brand is dedicated to William Ewart Gladstone, who served four terms as British Prime Minister during the reign of Queen Victoria. Gladstone holds a place in whisky history for signing the 1860 act that allowed Scotch whiskies to be blended; he was also known for his extensive axe collection and his love of tree-felling. The other member of the range is Black Axe.

What does The Gladstone Axe American Oak taste like?

On the nose, a malty, dry opening is joined by baking spices and light dried fruit; thanks to the Islay whisky's contribution, a fine smoke and fresh apple are also felt. The palate shows a gentle sweetness, oak, apple and light smoke, with touches of vanilla and milk chocolate. The finish is balanced and soft.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

It is a versatile whisky that can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails. Its lightly smoky, oaky character pairs well with barbecued and grilled red meat; it also makes an enjoyable match with mature cheeses.
