White Horse Fine Old is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky first produced in 1891 in Edinburgh by James Logan Mackie, now owned by Diageo. It is known for using the malt of Islay's famous Lagavulin distillery in its blend.
The brand takes its name from the historic White Horse inn in Edinburgh. Lagavulin's peated malt gives the blend a more pronounced but measured smoky character than most standard blends.
One review notes confectionery and grape sweetness, malt and freshly baked bread, along with light oak and smoke notes on the nose. On the palate, spice is more pronounced than on the nose; malt and pepper combine with soft peat, smoke and a light oak, while a caramel sweetness and cardamom are felt behind. On the medium-length finish, confectionery, pepper and light peat remain.
It can be enjoyed neat, with a few drops of water, or on the rocks; water brings out its peppery notes. Its lightly smoky character pairs well with barbecued food, grilled red meat and mature cheeses. Drinking it at room temperature in a tulip-shaped glass makes it easier to notice the balance between Lagavulin's light smoke and its caramel sweetness.
