Lot No. 40 Rye

Lot No. 40 is a 43% ABV Canadian rye whisky, made solely from rye at the Hiram Walker distillery in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It belongs to the Pernod Ricard group and is one of the few 100% rye whiskies in North America.

How is Lot No. 40 produced?

According to the producer, locally grown rye is distilled in small batches in traditional copper pot stills, a method that concentrates the rye's spice while preserving the fruity, floral nuances from fermentation. The whisky is matured in new white oak casks. The current range was launched in 2012.

What does it taste like?

Earthy rye is immediately apparent on the nose, joined by caramel, fig and flamed orange peel. The palate opens lightly floral at first, followed by cardamom, peppery coriander, brown sugar and vanilla. The producer also notes white pepper, roasted walnut and English toffee. On the finish, classic rye spice lingers for a long time.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in cocktails such as the Old Fashioned and Manhattan. Its spicy character pairs well with grilled red meat, spiced dishes and mature cheeses.
