Black & White is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky, now owned by Diageo, that was first produced by the London-based James Buchanan & Co. The black Scottish terrier and white West Highland terrier on its label are the brand's world-famous symbols.
What is the story of Black & White?
The blend was first prepared by James Buchanan in 1879; it was sold first as Buchanan's Blend, and later as House of Commons. Its black-and-white label gave rise to a popular nickname, which over time became the official brand name. The two-dog logo emerged in the 1890s on Buchanan's own idea. The brand passed to Diageo through mergers; France, Venezuela and Brazil are counted among its most successful markets, and today it is sold only outside the United Kingdom.
What does Black & White taste like?
According to IWSC tasting notes, the nose shows full fruit, rich malt and, in the background, a light smokiness with floral notes. The palate is round and soft; ripe citrus and pronounced oak are given liveliness by liquorice root and ginger. The finish is soft and sweet.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as a long drink with soda and cola. Its lightly smoky, citrus character pairs well with barbecued and grilled red meat; it also makes a good companion to a nut platter.

- Keep wine bottles on their side and spirits upright.
- Serve white/rosé and sparkling wine at 6–12°C, and reds at 16–18°C.
- Keep opened bottles closed; drink wine within a few days of opening.
