The Famous Grouse

The Famous Grouse is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky first produced in Perth in 1896 by Matthew Gloag & Son, now owned by William Grant & Sons. For many years it was known as Scotland's best-selling whisky.

The history of The Famous Grouse

The Gloag family, grocers and wine merchants in Perth, began preparing their own blends at the end of the 19th century. The product was first sold as "The Grouse", taking its current name in 1905; the red grouse figure on the label was also designed at that time. The brand remained with the Edrington group for many years before passing to William Grant & Sons in 2025.

What does it taste like?

The nose is light and lively, carrying sugared apple, dried flowers and biscuity barley notes. The palate is balanced; a rich, creamy malt core is joined by light spice and a faint hint of smoke. The finish is lightly sweet and malty.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or in highball cocktails. Its soft malt character pairs well with grilled chicken, cheese-based meze platters and nuts. Adding a few drops of water when drinking it neat brings out its biscuity malt and apple notes more clearly.
