Tullamore D.E.W. Original is a 40% ABV blended Irish whiskey produced by William Grant & Sons. Known for its "triple blend" structure of pot still, malt and grain whiskeys, it is the flagship product of the world's second best-selling Irish whiskey brand.
How is it made?
Three separate whiskeys work together in the blend: grain whiskey contributes sweetness, malt brings fruity notes, and pot still adds spice. The whiskeys are triple-distilled and matured in three different cask types — refill casks, ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry casks. The D.E.W. in the brand's name comes from the initials of Daniel Edmund Williams, a former manager of the old Tullamore distillery; William Grant & Sons acquired the brand in 2010 and opened a new distillery in the town of Tullamore in 2014.
What does Tullamore D.E.W. taste like?
The nose offers honey and toffee, with a light floral note and malted grain behind it; there are also hints of apple and blackcurrant leaf. The palate is silky and sweet, with toffee standing out. The finish is quick, soft and vanilla-led, with a light spiciness.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It is favoured neat, on ice, or as a long drink with ginger ale and soda. Its light, sweet character pairs well with chicken dishes, meze platters and breakfast-brunch spreads.
