Writers' Tears Mizunara Cask is a 55% ABV, limited-edition Irish whiskey from Walsh Whiskey (Amber Beverage Group), in which the brand's blend of single malt and single pot still whiskeys receives a final maturation in Japanese Mizunara oak casks.
Why is the Mizunara cask special?
Mizunara is a rare and expensive oak species native to Japan. Its high moisture content makes it difficult to work and prone to leaking casks; in return, it is known for lending whiskey distinctive aromas of sandalwood, coconut and incense. In this release, the whiskey first matures in American oak ex-bourbon casks, then rests for nine months in Mizunara casks before being bottled at a high strength.
What does Writers' Tears Mizunara taste like?
The nose combines apple and pear with the oily base typical of pot still whiskey. The palate shows vanilla, clove, sandalwood and notes reminiscent of Japanese incense. The classic Irish character of caramel, grassy malt and vanilla is enriched with sandalwood, coconut and a light smoky aroma.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
As it is bottled at 55% ABV, it is best tasted neat first, then opened up with a few drops of water. Its aromatic, woody character pairs well with mature cheeses, roasted nuts and dark chocolate desserts.
