Writers' Tears Tequila Cask Finish

Writers' Tears Tequila Cask Finish is a 47% ABV, limited-edition Irish whiskey from Walsh Whiskey (Amber Beverage Group), in which single pot still whiskey receives a final maturation in Añejo tequila casks. It is presented as the first single pot still Irish whiskey finished in tequila casks.

How did it come about?

This release is a collaboration between two companies within Amber Beverage Group: Walsh Whiskey in Ireland's Carlow region and Amber Production Tequila in the town of Tequila, Mexico. The award-winning Writers' Tears single pot still whiskey first matures in bourbon casks, then rests for nine months in Añejo tequila casks. It is bottled without chill filtration; its packaging is decorated with Mexico's "sugar skull" (calavera) motif.

What does it taste like?

According to the producer's notes, the nose has earthy, herbal liqueur-like aromas; reviews mention pepper, vanilla and herbal notes. On the palate, cracked black pepper and tobacco leaf stand out; the oily texture of pot still whiskey merges with tequila's complexity. The finish closes with a sweet-and-savoury balance carried by vanilla and coffee notes.

How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?

It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. Its peppery, herbal character makes an interesting pairing with Mexican-style spicy dishes, barbecue and grilled red meat.
