The Macallan A Night on Earth – The First Light is a 43% ABV, no-age-statement single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, part of the limited-edition series that the Macallan distillery, owned by the Edrington group, dedicates to New Year celebrations. It is the fourth release in the series and draws its inspiration from New Zealand, one of the first places to see each new year's sunrise.
What is the A Night on Earth series?
Macallan's A Night on Earth series is a gift range that tells, each year through the eyes of a different place, how different communities around the world welcome the New Year. The box and label design for The First Light is by New Zealand illustrator Bonnie Brown. The whisky is matured in a harmonious combination of sherry-seasoned American and European oak casks, with a small proportion of ex-bourbon casks also included; the producer describes the profile as warm and fruity.
What does The First Light taste like?
On the nose, toasted sweet oak, caramelised marshmallow, icing sugar, rich vanilla extract and fruit compote come to the fore, accompanied by sweet citrus peel. On the palate, rich caramel meets soft cake spices; hints of vanilla ice cream, pavlova, stone fruit, coconut and honey are felt. The finish is sweet and fruity, leaving soft spice and toasted oak behind.
How should it be served, and which foods does it pair well with?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. Its sweet, fruity character pairs well with fruit desserts such as pavlova or lemon tart, creamy desserts and roasted nuts.
