The Macallan A Night on Earth in Jerez is a no-age-statement single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, bottled at 43% ABV, from the limited-edition series produced by the Macallan distillery (part of the Edrington group) to mark New Year's Eve celebrations. It is the third release in the series and, as part of Macallan's 200th anniversary, draws inspiration from Jerez de la Frontera, the home of sherry.
Why Jerez?
Macallan's casks are seasoned with sherry wine in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and this release celebrates that connection. New Year's Eve is known as "Nochevieja" in Spain, and the tradition of eating grapes at midnight is also reflected in this release's design. The box and label design are by Jerez-born artist Maria Melero, featuring Jerez's traditional wall tiles (azulejos). The whisky is matured in a balanced combination of sherry-seasoned European and American oak casks.
What does A Night on Earth in Jerez taste like?
The nose leads with honey-coated Spanish pestiños pastries, sweet raisin, cinnamon, aniseed, rich oak and vibrant citrus. On the palate, sweet pastries, white grape, honeyed almond and vanilla meet balanced spice, with a hint of fresh rosemary. The finish is sweet, vibrant and warming.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. Its honeyed, pastry-toned, raisin character pairs well with fruit-based desserts, roasted almonds and mature cheeses.
