The Epicurean is a blended malt Scotch whisky prepared by Glasgow-based independent family firm Douglas Laing & Co. solely from single malt whiskies of the Lowlands region. It is the Lowland representative of the firm's Remarkable Regional Malts range, which reflects each of Scotland's whisky regions in turn.
The character on the label depicts a fun-loving gentleman with a taste for good food and drink, living in 1930s Glasgow. The blend brings together Lowland malts from the east and west of Scotland; no colouring is added and it is not cold-filtered. The 1-litre travel bottle is filled at a higher strength than the standard 70cl bottle, at 48%.
The nose offers a barley-led profile with citrus, floral and grassy notes. The palate is mouth-coating and sweet, carrying crushed sugar, scorched citrus, mixed spice, thyme, peach and sugar notes. On the finish, the grassy character returns, rounded off with almond, freshly cut grass and burnt sugar.
Its fresh, lively character suits it both to neat drinking and to highballs and cocktails. It offers a light pairing with seafood, fresh cheeses and green salads.
