Scapegrace Gold

Scapegrace Gold is a 57% ABV navy strength dry gin made in New Zealand by Scapegrace Distillery. It is made with a wheat-based neutral grain spirit and water from the Southern Alps; it is the brand's citrus-forward, full-bodied interpretation.

Which botanicals does Scapegrace Gold contain?

The recipe includes juniper, coriander seed, angelica root, orris root, liquorice root, lemon and orange peel, mandarin, cardamom, nutmeg, clove, cinnamon and cassia bark. The botanicals are sourced from different parts of the world. The addition of mandarin to orange and lemon creates a three-layered citrus structure in the gin. Scapegrace Gold was named the best London Dry gin at the 2018 International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC).

What does Scapegrace Gold taste like?

On the nose, orange blossom stands out, accompanied by a light touch of rose, vivid citrus peel and a fine hint of pepper. On the palate, citrus and juniper are pronounced, and the high strength makes the aromas feel more intense. The finish is warming and earthy: juniper lingers for a long time, while mandarin leaves a dry yet juicy, lightly sweet trace.

How is it served?

Because of its high strength, it is generally used in cocktails or with plenty of ice and tonic. The producer's signature serve is a Gimlet: the gin is shaken with fresh lime juice and sugar syrup over ice, strained into a glass and garnished with a sprig of rosemary.

What food does Scapegrace Gold pair with?

Its citrus-led structure pairs well with grilled fish and seafood, and with green salads dressed with a citrus sauce. Thanks to its spiced botanicals, it also holds its own alongside mildly spicy Asian dishes.
