Scapegrace Classic is a 42.2% ABV dry gin made in New Zealand by Scapegrace Distillery. The brand was founded by two friends, Mark Neal and Daniel McLaughlin; "scapegrace" is an English word for a mischievous, unruly person.

How is Scapegrace Classic made?

The gin is made with a wheat-based neutral spirit and water from New Zealand's Southern Alps. Twelve botanicals are used: lemon and orange peel and juniper from Spain, coriander seed from New Zealand, cardamom from Guatemala, nutmeg from Grenada, angelica root from Poland, liquorice root and orris root from Italy, cloves from the Comoros, cinnamon from Sri Lanka, and cassia bark from China. The gin won a double gold medal at the 2014 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

What does Scapegrace Classic taste like?

The nose opens immediately with classic juniper; light floral notes reminiscent of lavender and orange blossom follow, then the earthy tones of cinnamon and nutmeg. On the palate it is lively, with citrus and juniper to the fore, accompanied by orange peel and deep spice. The finish is warming and surprisingly long, with waves of juniper, orange and floral notes returning.

How is it served?

It suits a gin and tonic made with tonic and orange peel, or a Martini.

What food does it pair with?

Its citrus and spiced structure pairs well with grilled fish, seafood and grilled chicken.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Keep wine bottles on their side and spirits upright.
Serve white/rosé and sparkling wine at 6–12°C, and reds at 16–18°C.
Keep opened bottles closed; drink wine within a few days of opening.
