Johnnie Walker Double Black

Johnnie Walker Double Black is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky in which Diageo gives Black Label a smokier, stronger interpretation with more Islay whisky and heavily charred casks. It was first introduced in airport retail before going on general sale in 2011.

What sets Double Black apart from Black Label?

The core Black Label profile is retained, but the proportion of Islay whiskies in the blend is increased, and casks with heavily charred interiors are used in maturation. These two effects give a more pronounced smoke and a more intense flavour, while keeping Johnnie Walker's balanced house style. Johnnie Walker describes this whisky as a full-bodied, persistently smoky experience.

What does Johnnie Walker Double Black taste like?

The nose is light but oily; dry oak, honey and a stony smokiness are felt. According to the producer's notes, the palate is full and layered: Johnnie Walker's signature peat smoke shines through raisin and sultana; apple, pear and orange peel bring freshness, while creamy vanilla and spice add softness and sweetness. The long, warming finish combines spicy oak tannins with lingering smoke.

How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat, with a few drops of water, or on the rocks; it also suits a smoky highball made with soda. Its intense smoky character makes a strong pairing with barbecued and grilled red meat, as well as with mature, sharp cheeses.
