J&B Rare

J&B Rare is a 40% ABV blended Scotch whisky created in the early 1930s by Justerini & Brooks, London's long-established wine merchant, now produced within Diageo. It is known for its naturally pale colour and light, lively character.

What kind of blend is J&B Rare?

The blend is made up of 42 different malt and grain whiskies. At its heart are the "heart malts" from Speyside distilleries Knockando, Auchroisk, Strathmill and Glen Spey; these malts are matured for longer than the other whiskies in the blend to add body and depth. All the whiskies are rested in oak casks for at least three years. Also known as "the wine merchant's whisky", J&B Rare became famous in the 1950s and 60s through its association with Hollywood's Rat Pack generation.

What does J&B Rare taste like?

The nose is fruity, grassy and aromatic; soft apple and pear notes are balanced by American oak and a faint smokiness. On the palate, rich layers of vanilla stand out; a light grain-whisky base underlies it, while the malts add body, spice and fresh fruit. The finish is soft.

How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?

The producer particularly recommends J&B Rare in long drinks made with ginger ale or tonic. Its light, fruity character is easy to drink alongside grilled chicken, fish and nuts.
