Guinness Draught is a 4.2% ABV Irish stout brewed at the St. James's Gate brewery in Dublin, Ireland. Arthur Guinness signed the brewery's lease in 1759; Guinness Draught itself was first brewed in 1959 to mark the lease's 200th anniversary. The brand is today part of Diageo.
It is known for its deep ruby-red colour and creamy foam head. Roasted coffee and chocolate hints are felt on the nose; on the palate, bitter, sweet and roasted notes come together into a balanced, smooth whole. The nitrogen capsule (widget) found in can versions creates a dense, creamy foam like draught beer when opened.
In Guinness's well-known two-part pour, a clean, dry glass is tilted at 45 degrees and filled three-quarters full, left to settle, then topped up. When pouring from a can, tilting the glass also helps create the creamy foam.
Its roasted barley character sits well with bold flavours. Oysters and seafood are a classic pairing; grilled red meat and stew-style dishes, along with bitter-chocolate desserts, are also a good match.
