Budweiser Budvar is a 5% ABV pale Czech-style lager brewed at the Budějovický Budvar brewery in České Budějovice, Czech Republic. Founded in 1895, the brewery is still state-owned today. Due to a trademark dispute, the beer is sold as Czechvar in some markets, including the US and Canada.
How is Budweiser Budvar brewed?
The producer brews the beer with three core local ingredients: water from artesian wells beneath the brewery, malt made from Moravian barley, and the renowned Saaz hops from the Žatec region. The beer is conditioned in the brewery's cellars for around 90 days, a long maturation period that sets it apart from mass-produced lagers made in much less time.
How should it be served?
Czech lagers are served well chilled, with a generous head. Poured carefully into the glass, the beer should leave a thick, creamy layer of foam on top, which preserves the carbonation and aroma.
What does Budweiser Budvar pair with?
The balance between malt and Saaz hops makes it a good match for meat-based meals. Grilled and barbecued meats, sausages and mature yellow cheeses are fitting choices, and it is also easy to drink alongside salty snacks.
