Drebbel Gin is a 40% ABV London Dry gin made in small batches in the Netherlands using traditional Dutch distilling methods. Launched in 2019, the brand takes its name from Cornelis Drebbel (1572–1633), the Dutch inventor who built the first navigable submarine in 1620.
The recipe is built on eight natural botanicals: juniper, angelica root from France, orris root, coriander seed, Madagascan vanilla, Chinese liquorice root, Indian ginger and whole fresh lemons hand-picked from southern Spain. The use of fresh lemon is the main source of the gin's fresh character.
On the nose, juniper is balanced by pronounced lemon peel and sweet vanilla; ginger adds a spiced touch. This same freshness continues on the palate: lemon and vanilla soften juniper's sharpness while ginger, coriander and liquorice root add layers. The finish is soft and refreshing.
Though soft enough to drink neat, it shows best in a classic gin and tonic made with plenty of ice and a good-quality tonic. A slice of lemon or fresh ginger slice supports the aromas.
Its lemony, gingery character forms a natural match with seafood, sushi and light salads.
