Underberg

Underberg is a herbal bitters at 44% ABV, made by Underberg AG in Rheinberg, Germany. It is prepared to a secret recipe still guarded by the family founded by Hubert Underberg on 17 June 1846. The recipe uses aromatic herbs from 43 countries, and the drink is matured for several months in Slovenian oak casks.

Why does it come in such a small bottle?

Underberg has become synonymous with its 20 ml single-serve bottle, designed in 1949 by the founder's grandson Emil Underberg. This small paper-wrapped bottle provides a single-sip measure; the bottle's shape, colour and wrapping are all trademark elements of the brand.

What does it taste like?

On the nose, intense herbal aromas are joined by touches of cinnamon, clove and wood. On the palate it is full-bodied and dry; complex herbal notes combine with a light bitter-sweetness and spiced wood tones. The finish is long, warm and spicy, leaving faintly earthy herbal aromas.

How is it served and which foods does it pair with?

Traditionally it is drunk neat in a single sip after a meal, either chilled or at room temperature. It can also be mixed with tonic or ginger beer to make a herbal long drink. Its intense character pairs well with dark chocolate, roasted nuts and sharp cheeses.
