The Sexton Single Malt is a 40% ABV single malt Irish whiskey distilled at the Bushmills Distillery in Northern Ireland and presented as a separate brand owned by Proximo Spirits. Launched in 2017, it is easily recognised by its hexagonal, dark-coloured bottle.
How is it made?
The Sexton was created by Alex Thomas, who worked at Bushmills and became master blender in 2021. It is made from 100% Irish malted barley, triple-distilled and matured in ex-oloroso sherry casks; it carries no age statement. The bottle's hexagonal shape is inspired by the basalt columns of the Giant's Causeway near the town of Bushmills; the top-hatted skull on the label references the sexton, the official who tends a church.
What does The Sexton taste like?
Thanks to the sherry cask, it has a rich, fruity character with a pronounced honeycomb note. The nose shows a fresh, floral impression, sweet citrus reminiscent of lemon tart, toffee and almond notes. The palate offers marzipan, aromatic woodiness and a transition from confectionery sweetness to dark chocolate. The finish is lightly spiced.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It can be enjoyed neat, on ice, or in simple cocktails. Its sherried, fruity character pairs well with mature cheeses, dried-fruit desserts and roasted nuts.
