The Glenrothes Whisky Maker's Cut is a no-age-statement single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, bottled at 48.8% ABV and produced at the Glenrothes distillery, part of the Edrington group. It belongs to the distillery's sherry-focused Soleo Collection.
Whisky Maker's Cut is matured entirely in first-fill sherry casks and bottled at a relatively high strength of 48.8%. This allows the orange peel, vanilla and nutmeg tones from the sherry cask to come through intensely and clearly. The red colour on the label refers to the colour of the grape just before fermentation begins.
The nose leads with resinous tones, candied citrus peel and fresh oak. The palate is rich and spiced, with creamy vanilla meeting orange peel. The finish is long and fruity, leaving orange peel notes with a touch of nutmeg.
As this is a higher-strength whisky, tasting it neat first and then adding a few drops of water helps open up the aromas. Its orange and spice character pairs well with dark chocolate desserts, mature hard cheeses and roasted nuts.
