The Glenrothes 12 Year Old is a 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, bottled at 40% ABV and produced at the Glenrothes distillery, part of the Edrington group. It belongs to the distillery's Soleo Collection, which focuses on sherry cask maturation. Glenrothes has been producing whisky in Speyside since 1879.
What is the Soleo Collection?
The Soleo Collection is Glenrothes's range of five whiskies aged between 10 and 25 years, conceived as a tribute to the grapes used to make sherries such as Pedro Ximénez. Glenrothes 12 Year Old is matured entirely in sherry-seasoned oak casks, yet its profile is not heavy — it has the fruity, sweet elegance of mature Speyside whisky.
What does Glenrothes 12 Year Old taste like?
The nose is subtly aromatic, with fresh fruit, banana and vanilla to the fore. On the palate, the fruitiness of banana, lemon and melon is joined by vanilla and a touch of cinnamon. The finish is long and sweet, leaving a trace of melon and light spice. Despite the sherry cask influence, this is overall a light-bodied, fresh-fruited and soft whisky.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. Its light, fruity character strikes a balanced note with fruit-based desserts, fresh cheeses and light breakfast spreads.
