Ardbeg 10 Year Old (Ardbeg Ten) is a 10-year-matured, 46% ABV peated single malt Scotch whisky produced at the Ardbeg Distillery on the Isle of Islay, Scotland. The distillery belongs to the LVMH group and is one of the best-known examples of heavily peated Islay whiskies.
What makes Ardbeg Ten different?
Ardbeg sources its peated barley from the Port Ellen maltings. A purifier fitted to the lyne arm of Ardbeg's stills — found nowhere else on Islay — helps the whisky carry a fruity, floral sweetness despite the heavy smoke; the producer calls this "the peated paradox". The whisky is bottled without chill filtration and with no added colouring.
What does Ardbeg 10 taste like?
The nose shows smoky fruit, lemon and lime, dark chocolate, pronounced mint, black pepper and tarred rope; a splash of water brings out a salty sea spray. The palate offers exploding peat, lemon juice, cinnamon toffee, banana and cream, followed by espresso, liquorice and tarry smoke. The finish is very long and smoky, leaving traces of espresso, aniseed, toasted almond and fresh pear.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water; it is also used in smoky highballs. Its intensely smoky, salty character makes a strong pairing with smoked fish and seafood, barbecued meats and hard, mature cheeses.
