The Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask is a 14-year-matured, 43% ABV single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, produced at the Balvenie Distillery, owned by William Grant & Sons. It completes the final stage of its maturation in casks that previously held Caribbean rum, and quickly became one of the range's beloved classics.
What does the rum cask add to Balvenie?
The whisky matures for 14 years in ex-bourbon casks, then finishes in casks that previously held Caribbean rum. This finish adds a creamy richness and tropical fruit tones to Balvenie's well-known honeyed character. The result is a complex yet smooth-drinking, sweet-leaning single malt.
What does Balvenie 14 Year Old Caribbean Cask taste like?
The nose combines candied lemon, toffee and ripe banana with brown sugar, butter and nutmeg; shortbread, golden syrup and sweet grape accompany it. Tropical fruit and creamy coffee hints are also felt. The palate shows apple, lemon, icing sugar and toasted bread; caramel, toffee and sweet vanilla stand out, with a hint of mango emerging. The finish leaves syrupy toasted bread, freshly cut oak and baked apple.
How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?
Drinking it neat or with a few drops of water shows its sweet, creamy texture best. Its tropical, caramel notes pair well with fruit desserts, especially banana or pineapple desserts; creamy and chocolate desserts are also a good match.
