The Balvenie 12 Yıl DoubleWood

The Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood is a 12-year-matured, 40% ABV single malt Scotch whisky from Speyside, produced at the Balvenie Distillery, owned by William Grant & Sons. Known as one of the whiskies that introduced cask finishing to a wide audience, it is one of the distillery's best-known bottlings.

What does DoubleWood mean?

The "double wood" in the name describes a two-stage maturation: the whisky first matures in ex-bourbon casks, then undergoes a second maturation by being transferred to sherry casks. The first stage brings apple pie, honeyed grain and vanilla cream tones; the sherry cask adds dried-fruit and roasted-nut depth.

What does Balvenie 12 Year Old DoubleWood taste like?

The nose shows malt and wood, light chocolate, honey and sherry sweetness standing out; red fruits such as raspberry and cooked cherry accompany it, along with brioche tones. The palate is full and balanced: cherry and raspberry, sponge cake, honey, orange and hazelnut; a light spice comes with cinnamon and black pepper. The finish is sweetly spiced and full of red fruit.

How should it be served, and what food does it pair with?

It can be enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water; its soft, balanced character also makes it a good choice for those new to single malt. Its red-fruit, honeyed notes pair well with fruit desserts, while its nutty, dried-fruit tones suit mature cheeses and nuts.
