Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin is a 47% ABV dry gin made in Loßburg, in Germany's Black Forest (Schwarzwald) region. The number 47 in its name refers to both the 47 botanicals in the recipe and its alcohol content; the brand is now part of Pernod Ricard.

What is the story behind Monkey 47?

The brand's inspiration is Montgomery Collins, a British Royal Air Force officer who helped rebuild Berlin Zoo after the Second World War and took in a monkey there. Collins later opened a guesthouse called "Zum wilden Affen" (The Wild Monkey) in the Black Forest, where he served his own gin. Founder Alexander Stein reinterpreted the gin based on this story.

What botanicals does Monkey 47 contain, and what does it taste like?

Its botanicals include juniper, lime, lemon, almond, acacia, angelica, sage, sloe, spruce shoots, clove, lavender, jasmine, nutmeg, cardamom, lingonberry and cinnamon. The nose is fruity and woody, with juniper and citrus to the fore. On the palate it is complex, rich and smooth, with pine, citrus and floral notes. The finish is long and dry, leaving herbal and piney tones.

How is it served?

It shows its character best in a gin and tonic made with tonic, lime or a sage leaf, or in a classic Martini.

What food does it pair with?

Its herbal, fruity structure pairs well with grilled fish, mature cheeses and herb-dressed salads.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
