Laphroaig PX Cask is a no-age-statement, 48% ABV single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Laphroaig Distillery, owned by Suntory Global Spirits, on Islay. Known for its three-stage maturation, it was initially offered in a 1-litre bottle for travel retail.
How does the three-stage maturation work?
Barley dried with peat smoke is distilled with water from the nearby Kilbride stream and first matures in American ex-bourbon casks. It is then transferred to small 19th-century-style quarter casks; this stage gives the whisky a velvety texture. Finally, it finishes in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, gaining a rich, sweet character from them. While Laphroaig's harsh peat and seaweed tones are preserved, room is made for raisin, sultana and liquorice notes.
What does Laphroaig PX Cask taste like?
The nose is sweet and smoky; sultana, raisin and liquorice stand out, and marzipan and creamy nutty aromas open up with a splash of water. The palate combines peat smoke with layered oak and a heavy, sweet sherry taste. The finish is long and dry, leaving powerful peat smoke and intense sherry-influenced oak.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
The producer recommends drinking it neat or with a little water added. It makes a strong match with dark chocolate desserts, mature cheeses and barbecued meats.
