Laphroaig The 1815 Legacy Edition is a no-age-statement, 48% ABV single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Laphroaig Distillery, owned by Suntory Global Spirits, on Islay. It takes its name from 1815, the year the distillery was founded, and was created as a tribute to the generations of craftsmen who have worked there.
What makes The 1815 Legacy Edition different?
The whisky was developed by former distillery manager John Campbell. The barley is dried with the intense smoke of peat bogs on Laphroaig's traditional malting floor, and is prepared and distilled with water from the Kilbride stream. Maturation happens in two stages: first in first-fill bourbon casks, then in hogsheads made of new European oak. This dual structure combines the brand's signature smoky character with burnt raisin and caramelised dark-fruit tones. Long offered exclusively in airport shops, this release won gold at the 2021 International Wine & Spirits Competition.
What does Laphroaig 1815 taste like?
Its colour is a deep, warm sunset orange. The nose shows the signature peat smoke, burnt apricot and raisin. The palate offers broad, soft oak, rich caramelised dark fruit and a lively dried-fruit taste. The finish is long, closing with nuts, peat and oiled wood.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. It makes a match befitting its powerful character alongside barbecued meats, mature cheeses and dark chocolate desserts.
