Lagavulin 8 Year Old is a 48% ABV, 8-year-old single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Lagavulin Distillery, owned by Diageo, on Islay. It was first released as a limited edition to mark the distillery's 200th anniversary, then added to the permanent range.

What is the story behind Lagavulin 8 Year Old?

The whisky draws on an eight-year-old Lagavulin described as "exceedingly good" by whisky writer Alfred Barnard, who visited the distillery in the 1880s. It is younger, livelier and higher in strength than the brand's famous 16-year-old, yet clearly carries Lagavulin's characteristic dry, smoky, maritime signature.

What does Lagavulin 8 Year Old taste like?

The nose is soft and clean at first; light milk chocolate and lemon are followed by dry, maritime aromas and a fine grain note, alongside a tea-scented smoke. A splash of water reveals red fruit jam beneath the smoke. Starting light and turning oily, the palate is sweet, smoky and warming; charred notes, minty dark chocolate and salty, charred potato skin are felt. The finish is clean, very long and smoky; a light minty smoke wraps the chocolate and leaves a dry impression on the tongue.

How should it be served, and what does it pair with?

The producer recommends it neat or with a drop of water, in a nosing glass. It makes a strong match with barbecued meats, smoked seafood and mature cheeses.
