Lagavulin 16 Year Old is a 43% ABV, 16-year-old single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Lagavulin Distillery, owned by Diageo, on Islay. It is the distillery's flagship and is regarded as one of the world's most beloved Islay malts.
The whisky matures in oak casks for at least 16 years. It combines the intense peat smoke typical of southern Islay with the richness and dryness of a long maturation. Considered one of the most heavily peated whiskies of Islay, Lagavulin stands out for a wide aroma range within the smoke, spanning from caramel to citrus, making it a benchmark malt for many whisky lovers.
The nose combines intense peat smoke, iodine and seaweed with a rich, deep sweetness. On the full-bodied palate, dry peat smoke fills the mouth; a powerful yet gentle sweetness is followed by the sea, salt and a light touch of wood. The finish is long and elegant, leaving a peaty trace with plenty of salt and seaweed.
It is recommended neat or with a few drops of water. Its powerful smoke makes a classic pairing with barbecued meats, smoked fish and other seafood, and mature cheeses.
