Lagavulin 12 Year Old Special Release 2023 is a 56.4% ABV, 12-year-old single malt Scotch whisky produced by the Lagavulin Distillery, owned by Diageo, on Islay. It is the 2023 release of Diageo's annual limited Special Releases collection, presented under the name "The Ink of Legends".
What makes the 2023 release different?
Lagavulin 12 Year Old is a regular member of the Special Releases series; the 2023 release completes its final maturation in Don Julio Añejo tequila casks. Its packaging draws on ancient Mesoamerican tattoo art. The whisky is bottled at cask strength, meaning undiluted with water. Tequila casks add a herbal brightness and dark plum fruit to Lagavulin's intense peat smoke.
What does Lagavulin 12 Year Old SR 2023 taste like?
The nose shows an intense, aromatic, herbal smoke, sea air, citrus, ripe red fruit and a hint of grilled meat. The palate is full, velvety and creamy; citrus, juicy plum and Islay smoke stand out. The finish is long, dry, lightly salty and smoky.
How should it be served, and what does it pair with?
The producer recommends neat drinking; a few drops of water also open the aromas due to its cask strength. It makes a match befitting its powerful character alongside grilled and barbecued meats, smoked fish and mature cheeses.

- Keep wine bottles on their side and spirits upright.
- Serve white/rosé and sparkling wine at 6–12°C, and reds at 16–18°C.
- Keep opened bottles closed; drink wine within a few days of opening.
